Applications are now being accepted for the 2013/14 PhD program at IMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca (www.imtlucca.it). While the program is interdisciplinary, there are two areas of specific relevance to candidates with interests in economics, management science and statistics.
The track trains researchers, professionals and experts in political economy, applied public economics, industrial economics, with a focus on comparative institutional analysis, on big data and the empirical analysis of real and financial markets, and on macroeconomic policy. With its theoretical, quantitative and institutional approach, the program meets the increasing demand for highly qualified professionals, able to analyze, plan, and manage concrete applications of political economy.
Management Science (MS)
The curriculum, embedded within the Computer, Decision, and Systems Science (CDSS) track of the PhD program, is oriented towards supporting managerial decision making in complex organizations based on a quantitative approach to finance, marketing, information systems, operations, organizational behavior, innovation and industrial dynamics. The addressed research questions are those raised by the emerging digital economy, the transformation of organizations and markets, and opportunities for new business models. New methodologies to analyze “big data” are used to tackle the research challenges in the management of complex organizations.
Students will participate in introductory courses, held in English and common to all students of the track, that provide students with the necessary missing background. Core courses provide the basic concepts and theoretical foundations for understanding the research field of the curricula. Advanced courses are mainly conceived as curriculum-specific and introduce students to state-of-the-art results in the field. In addition to courses, the program is enriched by research seminars that are offered to transmit highly-specific and avant-garde concepts and, at the same time, are accessible to a wide student audience. Students will also work in close collaboration with the Institute’s research units (http://www.imtlucca.it/research/).
PhD students, besides receiving the standard research scholarship of €13,600/year (amount established by Italian law), are offered on-campus housing on a brand-new and fully integrated campus in the historical center of the beautiful Tuscan city of Lucca, and daily access to the canteen. Students also get the opportunity to spend research periods abroad during the program.
Please note that 5 additional PhD scholarships have been made available by two institutes of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), namely the Institute of Informatics and Telematics (http://www.iit.cnr.it/en) and the Institute of Information Science and Technologies (http://www.isti.cnr.it/).
